Northern beauties
For dramatic landscapes and an abundance of natural wonders, it’s hard to beat the fjords of Norway and Iceland. Olden is a picture-perfect Norwegian village nestled at the southern end of one branch of the beautiful Nordfjord and at the entrance to the gorgeous Oldedalen Valley. From here, you can explore the Briksdal Glacier (part of the largest glacier on the European mainland) and Hornindalsvatnet, Europe’s deepest lake. Also in Norway, Flåm is a small town in a spectacular setting. You’ll reach this port on an unforgettable cruise through Sognefjord, the world’s longest and deepest fjord, surrounded by snow-capped peaks and cascading waterfalls. From Flåm, a world of epic scenery and adventure awaits: try the scenic railway or get a closer look at fjords on a boat tour. In Iceland, Isafjördur is the perfect starting point for exploring the magnificent natural beauty of the country’s West Fjords. Take to the calm waters by kayak, go on a whale-watching safari or discover the quirky town and its intriguing local culture.
Late stays
See the city lights twinkle on these overnight stays, which allow you to maximise your time in port and see a different side to some of your favourite destinations. Amsterdam is famous for its exciting nightlife. Take in the sights on an evening canal cruise or walking tour, or venture out on your own to explore the city’s myriad restaurants and bars. St Petersburg is as beautiful at night as it is during the day. With your extra time in port you could spend the evening at the Hermitage Museum (without the crowds) or get a dose of culture at the ballet. It’s said New York is the city that never sleeps, and with an overnight stay in this bustling metropolis you’ll find out why. America’s biggest city is a night owl’s dream: listen to live music at authentic jazz and blues bars, dine at some of the world’s best restaurants, be dazzled by the lights of Times Square or ascend to the top of the Empire State Building for unforgettable views over Manhattan’s skyscrapers and beyond.
The classics
Some destinations simply have it all. Whether you’re a first-time cruiser or an experienced explorer, it’s hard to go wrong with iconic European destinations that offer culture, history and fun in equal measure. Venice and its spectacular network of canals should be top of the list for any traveller. Discover its many highlights – St Mark’s Basilica, Bridge of Sighs and Doge’s Palace, to name but a few – and take a gondola ride through the canals for the ultimate bucket-list experience. The walled city of Dubrovnik is another firm favourite. Whether exploring its beautifully preserved Old Town on foot or swimming in the crystal-clear waters of the Adriatic Sea, you’ll never be short of things to do in this historic city. Culture seekers shouldn’t miss Florence, which can be reached from the ports of Livorno or La Spezia. The Italian city is considered one of the most beautiful places in the world and is host to such artistic masterpieces as Michelangelo’s David. For a taste of island life with European flair, Madeira is a must. The Portuguese archipelago is perhaps best known for its namesake wine, but there’s so much more to Madeira. It boasts great food, colourful gardens and a warm subtropical climate, but it’s worth a visit for the breathtaking scenery alone.
