P&O Cruises presents
Iona: Meet the Makers

Meet the makers of our newest ship

Behind every great ship is a team of people who bring experience, passion and skill to its creation.

Here, we introduce you to six of the experts behind Iona’s incredible design. Discover what inspires them and why they’re excited for guests to step on board for the first time.

Alison Clixby

Director of Hotel Design and Projects, Carnival UK

Alison Clixby has worked her design magic on a number of ship builds and refits for P&O Cruises and Carnival UK. With Iona, the sea served as her key inspiration – the natural environment outside the ship’s windows is reflected in the chosen furnishings, finishes and materials. Here, Alison tells us how comfort and elegance combine to create a spectacular home away from home for guests on Iona.

Franz-Josef Wolf

Senior Project Manager, Partner Ship Design

The talented team at Partner Ship Design are experts in cruise ship interiors. As the creative force behind Iona’s SkyDome, they’ve accomplished a cruise industry first: with its glass dome roof, spacious layout and mix of functions, the unique all-weather space is unlike anything else at sea. Senior project manager Franz-Josef Wolf gives us an inside look at just some of the features guests will find under the dome.

Tim Meyer

Managing Director, Meyer Werft shipyard

The Meyer Werft Shipyard in Papenburg, Germany has been in operation for more than 200 years and today is one of the world’s leading builders of cruise ships. The family-run business has previously been behind the creation of Oriana and Aurora, so it’s only natural they were trusted to deliver our biggest ship to date. Managing director Tim Meyer tells us about the build and what makes Iona special.

James Dilley

Director, Jestico + Whiles

Iona’s Grand Atrium is the ship’s beating heart – a place to meet, dine, relax and be entertained, day and night. In designing the Grand Atrium, James Dilley and the team at London-based architecture and design firm Jestico + Whiles wanted to create a space where guests could return time and time again and have a different experience on each visit. James tells us about the inspiration behind the elegant design and what he hopes guests will feel when they step on board.

Tom Tempest-Radford

Art Curator

Some 4,500 works of art will grace Iona’s incredible spaces – from smaller pieces in the cabins to large commissions in public areas – and it’s Tom Tempest-Radford’s job to find each and every one of them. Tom explains the process of choosing art for a ship that’s still being built, scouring the globe to find the best artists, and how art on board elevates the P&O Cruises guest experience.

Terry McGillicuddy

Director, Richmond International

The team at Richmond International are experts in creating beautiful, practical interiors for hotels all around the world. The London-based hospitality design firm turn their attentions to the sea on Iona, designing all of the ship’s accommodation options, including the brand-new Conservatory Mini-suite. Director Terry McGillicuddy tells us how they made the sea the star when designing Iona’s cabins and how the little things – from colours to mirrors to surfaces – make all the difference.
