About Skjolden

Surrounded by steep hills with spectacular falls, Skjolden is located at the head of the longest navigable fjord in the world - Sognefjord. As well as being situated in a breathtaking location, the town itself is host to a number of activities and attractions.
Once home to the Austrian philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein (1889-1951), he wrote some of his most important works here.

Visit Urnes Stave Church, the oldest stave church found in Norway, included on UNESCO's World Heritage list. Built in the 12th and 13th centuries, it is an outstanding example of traditional Scandinavian wooden architecture, combing Celtic, Viking and Romanesque design.

In the Jostedalsbreen National Park you can discover everything from fjords to green valleys, farms, barren mountains and glaciers, with peaks rising to 2000 metres. In the heart of these beautiful landscapes stands the Jostedal glacier, the largest glacier in mainland Europe.

Glaciers and Views

Activity low

Duration: 4 hours

See how the landscape and terrain of Jostedal Glacier National Park have been shaped over the years by the ice and rivers.

Leaving Skjolden behind, you’ll experience a varied landscape, first along the fjord surrounded by lush green views, then through the Jostedal Valley with its traditional agricultural scenery. Then it’s on to Jostedal Glacier National Park, the largest ice field in mainland Norway and a remnant from the last ice age, some 18,000 years ago.

Situated at the foot of the Nigardsbreen Glacier is the Breheim Glacier Centre, an information centre for the National Park. The centre offers exhibitions, a souvenir shop, café and a wonderful view of the glacier. Enjoy some free time to visit independently.

After your visit to the Breheim Glacier Centre, your scenic drive continues on a private toll road, which brings you into Nigardsbreen Nature Reserve, where a stop will be made to see the mighty Nigardsbreen Glacier in the distance (approximately 2 miles away). The glacier is one of the ‘arms’ stretching from the Jostedal Glacier into the valley.

During your return journey, a photo stop will be made at Nes to allow you to capture stunning views of the Lustrafjord.
