The Greenlandic Ice Sheet
The majority of Greenland is covered by the only permanent ice sheet outside Antarctica. It’s roughly 14 times the size of England and at its edges this marvel of nature can be up to 100,000 years old. The ice cap creates huge icebergs and pushes them out to sea, and due to their changing shape, when you view them you’ll see something no one ever has before.
Wildlife
While some of its more infamous inhabitants, such as polar bears, are mostly elusive to visitors, you have a good chance of encountering much of Greenland’s fauna. Musk oxen, reindeer and sea eagles are all regularly seen, and if you want the ultimate wildlife experience, you can go whale watching. Fin, humpback, and minke whales are the most commonly spotted, while bowhead, blue, and sperm whales are far from rare.
Food
Greenlanders are renowned for their hospitality and that’s good news for you! The delicious local cuisine includes many dishes of marine mammals, game, birds and fish to provide the energy needed to endure the cold winters. For a little taste of everything, find a restaurant offering a Greenlandic buffet and let your curiosity guide you. Make sure you arrive hungry!
