It is one of the most visited islands in the Aegean, yet still retains much of its picture postcard beauty. Mykonos effortlessly strikes a balance for visitors with a mix of lively bars and restaurants in the most populous areas, with nearby areas of tranquillity, outstanding natural beauty and rich history.

The Town of Mykonos is a hive of activity with some of the most famous landmarks such as Little Venice, famous for its picturesque medieval two and three storey houses which stand like a colourful wall against the sea. Mykonos is also world famous for its beaches. Kalafati Beach is a prime example with golden white sand lapped gently by a crystal clear sea.

A Walk around Mykonos and Maritime Museum

The best way to discover Mykonos is on foot, and with a local guide to bring the town’s streets and history alive.

Cosmopolitan Mykonos town rises in a natural amphitheatre style, set around a half moon bay. The small narrow streets are a labyrinth of whitewashed walls, and you’ll certainly appreciate why the layout is so confusing, as it was designed to foil attacking pirates in days gone by.

After a short coach transfer, you’ll be taken on a guided walking tour through the maze of streets, heading towards the Aegean Maritime Museum. Set in a traditional family house, a visit to this small but intriguing museum will provide an insight into the rich maritime history of Mykonos.

Your walk will continue through the town, pausing for photo stops along the way. Admire the islands Church of Paraportiani, and Little Venice that is said to be one of the most photographed neighbourhoods in Europe. During your walk, a stop will be made at a local venue to enjoy a soft drink refreshment.

Your walking tour will draw to an end at the sea front of Mykonos Town. Here, you’ll be given the option of either returning to the ship by shuttle bus from the edge of town, or staying to further explore on your own and returning at leisure.

Ano Mera Monastery, Wine Tasting and Mykonos Town

A delightful tour that allows you to discover the Monastery of Ano Mera, the Assimomitis Winery and Mykonos Town.

Head to the picturesque village of Ano Mera, the largest village on the island and known for its charming square and pristine working Monastery. The Monastery’s impressive bell tower and marble fountain provide the perfect photo opportunity.

Visit a small winery called Assimomitis, famed for its unusual use of music therapy to promote the growth of its grape harvest. Its most notable wine is a dessert wine, which is still made using the traditional method of crushing the grapes under bare feet. Here, you’ll have the opportunity to learn about the production process and sample 3 popular wines, accompanied by a selection of local snacks.

Before heading back to the ship, enjoy a guided walking tour through the picturesque streets of Mykonos Town, stopping off along the way to sample typical Greek desserts in a local pastry shop.

Delos Birthplace of Apollo

Discover the UNESCO protected island of Delos, the birthplace of Apollo and Artemis.

A short drive from the harbour takes you to Mykonos Town where you will board the local ferry for a 40 minute leisurely sail to the Island of Delos.

According to mythology, the small island of Delos, meaning ‘revealed’, appeared amid the waves, so that Leto, the mistress to Zeus would have a place to give birth to her twins, the God Apollo and Goddess Artemis.

The island is protected by UNESCO and is part of the World’s Cultural Heritage. Through the centuries, varying rulers have developed the area both commercially and spiritually, by building impressive temples, sanctuaries and numerous statues. Today, the landscape is peppered with ruins including a stadium, tiers of theatre seats, fallen columns and partial mosaics which adorned the houses of the rich. Amongst the ruins, five marble lions stand majestically in a row. Other interesting monuments spread over a wide area are the Agora, the treasures of the various cities, the Sanctuary of Apollo, the Sanctuary of the Foreign Gods and the Sacred Mount Cynthus.

This excursion will operate by coach, ferry and on foot.The duration of this tour is dependent on the berth and includes ferry boarding time and may vary between 4-4½ hours. There is approximately 2 hours of walking over uneven terrain included with extended periods of standing. Comfortable walking shoes, hats and sun protection are strongly recommended. This tour is weather dependent. There is a walk of approximately 10 minutes from the bus drop-off point to the pier to board the Delos ferry. The tour will end in Mykonos Town and passengers will be given the option to return to the ship by shuttle bus or to further explore the town and return at their leisure.

Greek Cooking Experience

Visit a traditional home and participate in a Greek Cooking Class on this small group tour.

A short bus journey from the port will take you to a typical Myconian homestead, or ‘Spiti’. Upon arrival, you’ll be warmly welcomed with the traditional ‘loukoumi' (Greece’s very own version of Turkish delight), and a cheery glass of Teta's liqueur.

Next, it’s a tour of the kitchen garden and an informative lesson in how to cultivate your own vegetables all year-round. Waiting for you in a corner of the garden will be a small taster of local specialities – rusk with ‘kopanisti’ (a local cheese), louza (a local smoked ham), tomatoes and olives, along with locally-made wine and raki.

During your cooking lesson, you’ll learn how to make Greek spinach pie, stuffed tomatoes and peppers and the famous Greek dip, tzatziki. Afterwards, indulge in a delicious lunch and relish the fruits of your labour.

Before making your way back to the ship, enjoy a photo opportunity at the Spiti – a great way to mark a memorable day.

Please note that sun beds and umbrellas are available to hire locally, but these cannot be guaranteed, as this is one of the island’s most popular beaches and it can become very crowded during the peak season.
