About Geiranger

It is just nine miles long but the snaking Geirangerfjord is the most photographed of all Norways fjords because of the sheer beauty of its setting.

As you cruise along to the ships anchorage off Geiranger cruise port, just marvel at the views as spectacular waterfalls with evocative names like Bridal Veil and The Seven Sisters cascade down from the steep rocky peaks that overlook the fjord from both sides.

Geiranger welcomed its first cruise ship (carrying a group of Quakers from Scotland) in 1869 and its appeal for visitors has hardly changed since then. It is still just a small village resort which simply makes the ideal base for walking, boating, or motoring tours into a surrounding area full of natural beauty and magnificent scenery with snow-capped mountains, verdant valleys, plunging waterfalls and age-old glaciers.

There are superb views from the Dalsnibban mountain plateau overlooking the fjord.

Geirangerfjord Views

Duration: 2 hours

Enjoy a panoramic tour of the Geirangerfjord area with its beautiful mountain scenery.

Travel along the fjord, before following the winding road up the mountainside along 11 hairpin bends. At the uppermost bend, called the Eagles Bend, stop to enjoy the fantastic panoramic views.

In the distance lie old farms, stubbornly clinging onto narrow shelves high above the fjord. For generations families were able to make a living up there, and today great efforts are being made to restore these relics of the past.

Return via the same road, passing several farms where some of the buildings are more than 200 years old. Drive through the village of Geiranger, passing the little octagonal church, before ascending to the viewpoint of Flydal Gorge. From here there are lovely views of the picture-postcard village of Geiranger, the fjord and your ship. The return to Geiranger is via the same route.

Herdal Mountain Farm

Activity medium

Duration: 3½ hours

A unique chance to experience life at a remote mountain farm nestled 500 metres above sea level within a UNESCO World Heritage Area.

Herdalsetra is the largest mountain farm still in use in Norway and has been running continuously for more than 300 years.

Your coach will climb the exciting 11 hairpin bends of Eagle Road before stopping for a spectacular view of the Seven Sisters Waterfall, and your ship anchored below. Reaching the breathtaking summit, drive through snow-covered mountains and lush green valleys before reaching the farm.

At Ytterdal you will find Norway's northernmost orchard, where real summer fruits such as apricots grow. Climb from here to Herdal Farm, which had no road connecting it to civilisation until 1960 and operates from June until the end of August. A guided tour will introduce you to the friendly people (and animals) who work the farm. The farm is home to several hundred goats. Discover the traditional processes that produce delicious goat’s cheese and caramels and learn how the farm’s goats, cows, sheep, horses, and of course people, thrive in this unique environment. Enjoy samples of the fruits of their labour while you soak in the surroundings.

Travelling back to sea level on Eagle Road, revel in the enthralling UNESCO World Heritage Area’s scenery.
