Barrow

This Lancashire port town is just a short distance from the Lake District, making it the perfect gateway to some of England's most beautiful countryside. Why not take a tour of some of the picture-perfect villages that dot the landscape, or travel up into the hills to take in truly breathtaking views of the valleys, forests and lakes below? For the more active, a day's hiking will allow you to explore some of the more wild parts of the Southern Lake District - perhaps you'll spot an elusive Red Squirrel or the rare Osprey.

Barrow itself offers some interesting sights - not least its historic docks where British submarines are still built. Barrow's long association for the Royal Navy is explored in the fascinating Dock Museum, housed in an old dry dock.
