About Alicante

Built around a natural harbour, the main city and cruise port on Spain's Costa Blanca, Alicante, is also a top beach resort in its own right. It has a sophisticated Mediterranean feel with its restored old town adding to its charm and the attraction of its sandy beaches. Dubbed the 'City of Light' when founded by the Romans, Alicante is still a relaxing place to walk around.

Down from the impressive Castillo de Santa Barbara fortress, which offers impressive views across the city, most activity centres in the streets around the Ayuntamiento, a plaza area buzzing with restaurants and tapas bars. There are also many cafés along the seafront.

Works by artists including Dali, Miro and Picasso are on show at the Museo de Arte Siglo and there is also an archaeological museum.

Alicante by Segway

Head out on a unique adventure through the streets of Alicante as your guide accompanies you throughout this Segway city tour.

Leave the port area behind and ride towards the famous Spanish Esplanade, Paseo de las Palmeras, known for its distinctive pavements and palm trees. A stop will be made at Plaza Gabriel Miró; named after a famous Spanish poet, before you continue your journey towards the historic city centre.

Visit the Garrigo Museum and see the tunnels that connect the city’s ancient water deposits. From the terrace area, Santa Barbara Castle, formerly used as a prison, can be viewed, proudly standing at the peak of Mount Benacantil, as well as the famous silhouette of the Arabian face on the mountain.

Return to the Old Quarter, through St Augustine Square, past the 18th century Baroque-style Town Hall, and through the Spanish Esplanade as you make your way back to the ship.

Essential information

This excursion is only suitable for those in good physical condition. Passengers must be at least 16 years of age and weigh no more than 140kg. Sunglasses, sunscreen and suitable footwear are recommended. Helmets will be provided and must be worn when riding the Segway. Regular stops will be made throughout the tour. Enchanting Villajoyosa and Altea

Discover Villajoyosa’s colourful delights, including a delicious chocolate museum, before continuing to artists’ favourite place; Altea.

Villajoyosa’s charming seafront is a photographer’s delight, with groups of tiny houses painted in bright, gaudy colours, originally used to help returning fishermen find their way home. The narrow streets in the town’s historic heart bustle with markets and you may even detect mouth-watering wafts of the town’s unexpected industry, chocolate! Your walking tour will help you see the most of this Spanish gem.

Next, you’ll make a stop at the Chocolates Valor Museum, to discover how the largest chocolate producer in Spain developed its success and its relationship with its home town. After your visit, enjoy a refreshment of tea or coffee and a croissant in a nearby bar.

Your tour will continue with a drive to Altea. A town chosen by many artists as a place of inspiration its whitewashed houses provide a fascinating contrast to the colours of Villajoyosa. Enjoy approximately 60 minutes of free time to explore the cobblestoned streets of a town known as the most beautiful on the Costa Blanca. Watch the busy fishing boats from the palm-fringed promenade, sample the fruits of their labour at one of the traditional cafés or browse the church square, typically home to artisans selling quirky jewellery and leather goods.

Enjoy a stunning view across the Mediterranean from a panoramic balcony, before returning to your ship.

Magical Canelobre Caves and Alicante

Delve into Alicante’s history, take in stunning views from Castle Santa Barbara and explore the breathtaking Canelobre Caves!

Leaving the modern port behind, your expert guide will take you on a journey through Alicante’s fascinating Moorish history at the imposing Castle of Santa Barbara, set high above the city on Benacanti Hill. Breathtaking views await you from the battlements of one the largest medieval fortresses in Europe - your guide will bring the past inhabitants to life as you investigate the interior.

Back at sea level your coach will take past San Juan Beach, before arriving at Alicante’s historic Old Quarter. A guided stroll will lead you to the Cathedral Church of Saint Nicholas. The sober exterior dominates the network of streets around it, yet contained within you will find the chapel of Holy Communion, a beautiful example of Spanish Baroque. Enjoy some free time to explore the area. You’ll also have an opportunity to visit the small Synagogue of Alicante.

Rejoining your coach, you’ll drive to Busot, where the magnificent Canelobre Caves await you! The stalactites and stalagmites take on mystical shapes within a vaulted ceiling around 210 feet tall, giving the cave a cathedral like feel. The main attraction is the stunning candelabra formation, from which the caves are named.

Relax on a brief panoramic drive through bustling Alicante as you head back to the ship.

Essential information

This tour will operate by coahc and on foot. Comfortable footwear and layered clothing is recommended as it can be cold inside the caves. Modest dress is required inside the Church of Saint Nicholas. No photography is allowed inside the caves.
